Lesson 2: Farm Objects
Vocab Taught: Barn, Farm house, Fence, Gate, Tractor, Straw
Preparation: Flashcards, “old McDonald had a farm” song, sheep cut-outs, scissors, glue, paddle-pop sticks (or something similar) and cotton balls.
Age/level: beginner about 5/6/7 years.
Time: About an hour, depending on class size.
Activity:
Possible sentence structures for this lesson:
1. What is it? It’s a cow.
Warmer – Old McDonald had a farm. 5 minutes.
Review last lessons vocab with a game of animal charades. 5 Minutes
Introduce the new language using TPR and flashcards. Drill the language using a variety of drills – all together, singular and st to st drills. Finish the drills with a line race. Students must ask “What is it?” to the next student who responds with “It’s a chicken.” The flashcard is passed to the next student and the process is repeated until it reaches the end of the line. 10 minutes.
Play Strike-a-pose with the new vocabulary.
Choose a pose for each of the vocabulary items. Demonstrate to the students that when you say an item they must strike the correct pose. Students have to sit down if they strike the wrong pose or if they take too long to strike the correct pose. The last student standing is the winner. After one student is declared the winner, get all the students up and play another five or six rounds. Then just declare everyone a winner with a big cheer!
10-15 minutes.
Craft Activity: Cotton Ball Sheep
You will need sheep cut-outs, scissors, glue, paddle-pop sticks (or something similar) and cotton balls.
Demonstrate to the students how to make the sheep by:
1. Cutting out the sheep
2. Gluing the cotton balls to the front of the sheep
3. Gluing the paddle-pop stick to the back of the sheep
This will take at least 10-15 minutes.
Fun Activity: Duck, Duck, Goose. Change “duck” and “goose” to other words. 10 minutes.
