Lesson 3: Treasure Hunt!
Vocab Taught: Sword, map, boat, ship
Phonics taught: m-a-p
Preparation: Flashcards, a map for each group, pirate hats from previous lesson, treasure chests from previous lesson.
Fill the treasure chests with lollies or another “treasure”. Hide the treasure chests around the school and draw maps leading the students to each one. You might have a series of maps, where one map leads to another map, which leads to another map, finally arriving at the real treasure.

Time: About an hour, depending on class size.

Warm-up and review – run and slap. Draw the four vocab items, from the last lesson, on the board. Explain to the students that they must run, slap and say the pictures in the correct order. For example, if you say “treasure, gold, island” then the students have to run, slap and say the vocab in that order. Do this with 2 students at a time. 5-7 minutes.

Introduce and drill the new vocab – be sure to get plenty of student to student interaction. 10 minutes.

Play a game of stations as a follow-up. 5 – 7 minutes.
