Let your young learners learn all about pirates. In this series of lesson plans you will:
  1. Make a pirate hat
  2. Make a treasure chest
  3. Go on a treasure hunt

Lesson 1: Pirate Hat
Lesson 1: Pirate Hat
Vocab Taught: pirate, pirate ship, parrot, peg leg, feather, pirate hat
Phonics taught: l-e-g
Preparation: Flashcards, newspaper for making pirate hats – 1 sheet per student.
Time: About an hour, depending on class size.

Warmer: teacher says. 5-7 minutes.

Introduce and drill new vocabulary – be sure to get plenty of student to student interaction. 10 minutes.

Hopscotch – students must use flashcards to escape from the pirate! If they miss a flashcard them the pirate catches them. They must say the vocabulary of the flashcard. 7-10 minutes.

Duck, duck, goose – substitute duck with parrot and goose with pirate so that it becomes parrot, parrot, pirate. This can help the students to distinguish between these similar words. 10 minutes

Make a pirate hat!

Be sure to demonstrate in front of the kids so that they get the idea!
Make sure the students keep the pirate hats at school for the future lessons. 10 -15 minutes

Phonics l-e-g
Teach the phonic values of the three letters. Play the upside down game using phonic sounds. 10 minutes.

Lesson 2: Make a Treasure Chest

Vocab Taught: Treasure, treasure chest, gold, island.
Phonics taught: g-o-l-d
Preparation: Flashcards, Shoebox – 1 for every five students, Coloured paper or paint, Card, Coloured pens, Tin foil, Glitter, Safety scissors

Time: About an hour, depending on class size.

Warmer + Review – upside-down game. Get two or three students up at a time. Give them an item of vocab, for example: It’s a parrot. The students race to get the correct flashcard. Make sure that they say the vocab when they pick up the flashcard. 5-7 minutes.

Introduce and drill the new vocab – be sure to get plenty of student to student interaction. 10 minutes.

Follow-up with a game of Chinese whispers. 10 minutes.

Make a treasure chest

Demonstrate in front of the class how to make the treasure chest.
Split the class into groups of 5 or so. Get them to decorate their treasure chests. 25 minutes. We will use the treasure chests in the next lesson, so be sure that they stay in the classroom!

Phonics: g-o-l-d
Teach the phonic values of the four letters. Play target throwing by writing the letters on the board and throwing a ball at whichever letter you (or a student elected as the teacher) say. Make sure they students say the letters and their phonic values when they hit each letter.


Lesson 3: Treasure Hunt!

Vocab Taught: Sword, map, boat, ship
Phonics taught: m-a-p
Preparation: Flashcards, a map for each group, pirate hats from previous lesson, treasure chests from previous lesson.
Fill the treasure chests with lollies or another “treasure”. Hide the treasure chests around the school and draw maps leading the students to each one. You might have a series of maps, where one map leads to another map, which leads to another map, finally arriving at the real treasure.

Time: About an hour, depending on class size.

Warm-up and review – run and slap. Draw the four vocab items, from the last lesson, on the board. Explain to the students that they must run, slap and say the pictures in the correct order. For example, if you say “treasure, gold, island” then the students have to run, slap and say the vocab in that order. Do this with 2 students at a time. 5-7 minutes.

Introduce and drill the new vocab – be sure to get plenty of student to student interaction. 10 minutes.

Play a game of stations as a follow-up. 5 – 7 minutes.

Treasure Hunt!
Give the maps to the students and explain that they must follow the directions in order to find the treasure. Walk around with the students and give them aide if they seem to be have a hard time. Fill the treasure chests with lollies or another “treasure”. Hide the treasure chests around the school and draw maps leading the students to each one. You might have a series of maps, where one map leads to another map, which leads to another map, finally arriving at the real treasure.
This activity can around 20 – 25 minutes.

Phonics: m-a-p
Teach the phonic values of the three letters. Play whisper erase – this is similar to Chinese whispers, except the students must erase the letter that has been whispered down the line. 5 – 10 minutes.
