Pirates!

Lesson 1: Pirate Hat

Lesson 1: Pirate Hat
Vocab Taught: pirate, pirate ship, parrot, peg leg, feather, pirate hat
Phonics taught: l-e-g
Preparation: Flashcards, newspaper for making pirate hats – 1 sheet per student.
Time: About an hour, depending on class size.

Warmer: teacher says. 5-7 minutes.

Introduce and drill new vocabulary – be sure to get plenty of student to student interaction. 10 minutes.

Hopscotch – students must use flashcards to escape from the pirate! If they miss a flashcard them the pirate catches them. They must say the vocabulary of the flashcard. 7-10 minutes.

Duck, duck, goose – substitute duck with parrot and goose with pirate so that it becomes parrot, parrot, pirate. This can help the students to distinguish between these similar words. 10 minutes

Make a pirate hat!

Be sure to demonstrate in front of the kids so that they get the idea!
Make sure the students keep the pirate hats at school for the future lessons. 10 -15 minutes

Phonics l-e-g
Teach the phonic values of the three letters. Play the upside down game using phonic sounds. 10 minutes.
